MONGOOSE

Club Viva, July 25, 2000

I'm tellin ya, in a perfect world Mongoose is selling out large stadiums. These guys are just an incredible band and they rolled through town last night and blew the place away.

For the last few weeks I've been pumpin em up heavy, and - as usual - they came through again. They played at a small club (350 people) and the place was packed. Came on at 10:30 with "Feelin Thirsty" and they were just layin down some of the most crucial sounds I've ever heard. For those unaware, their bass player for the past year or so is Ronnie Stepper, who was Steel Pulse's original bassist. Talkin about layin down some rhythms!!! This guy was just skankin all night. They were missing one of their horn players as well as their keyboardist, but they didn't miss a beat. Andre, the lone horn player, is incredibly talented and he was simply blasting solos all night. And Maimon is simply one of the coolest guys around. Fantastic writer and great stage presence. Singing and doing some chanting in Hebrew which is just amazing. If you're unfamiliar with these guys, they are ROOTS. Check em out (and pick up "Soul Deliverance" at all costs as well as their new 5 song "demo" which Ronnie calls it, but it is a killer!)...

They were sounding incredibly tight, changing their songs around, and just blowing the place away when they took a break at 11:30. Didn't get back on til 12:20 which really sucked. Way too long! The DJ was decent as I told him to stay with roots, then he started blasting some dancehall which I just HATE when it's during intermission of a roots band. That was the only drag for me, but when they got back on stage all was well again. Played til 1:15 or so and it was truly a memorable evening.

Promoters: if you have the chance, get Mongoose to your town. And by all means, people, if you have a chance to see them, do it! They're one of the best bands in the world right now...

Keep it skankin
