MORGAN HERITAGE

Pop's, June 15, 2002

Last night, Morgan Heritage came through St. Louis and blew the place away...

I got to the venue (Pops) at around 9:30 and was informed there was a curfew at 11:30 sharp. The start time was doors at 7, show at 8, but the promoter's reputation precedes her and things always start late (and sometimes not at all). Close to 10 I'm talking to some people and they don't think it's even gonna happen. LMS is the opening band and there's only 90 minutes til curfew. I'm thinking it's nightmare time again...

All of a sudden at 10 p.m. Denroy Morgan takes the stage, introduces his kids, and we're off. They all took the stage in matching denin outfits and were really excellent. Peter has just an incredible voice and was sounding fantastic. The band was tight and the crowd was into it.

Things were cool with me, I was enjoying it, then all of a sudden during "Helping Hand," they just kicked it into overdrive and I was totally blown away. They went through "Reggae Bring Back Love," "Down By The River" and others, and it was really excellent. Great lyrics, too. Everybody was just singing along...

I'm looking at my watch, realize it's 11:30 and they're done. Or so I figured. Pretty strict place, but all of a sudden they came back and played for 15 minutes, closing down with "Don't Haffi Dread," with everybody up on stage (LMS and Denroy, too). Oh yeah, LMS came out for 2 songs around 11 p.m or so and were really good. Great stage presence and sounded great...

After the show the band went out and sold shirts and CDs and signed autographs and were just basically really cool. They said usually LMS would open, but because of the way it turned out with the time restraints, they came out like I said for just the 2 songs at the end. But it somehow turned out great and everybody walked out blown away... They'll be back in town on June 26th as part of the Van's Warped tour at a 20,000 seat ampitheatre, but it was really great seeing them at an intimate venue. They were killer and definitely lived up to the hype...
