Striker Lee Presents "Oldies Keep Swinging"
(Sonic Sounds)
This originally ran in the St. Louis Post Dispatch in 1992.
Sonic Sounds has once again delivered a single disc containing 20 tracks of vintage
reggae.
This release showcases some of the prolific 1970's production of Bunny "Striker"
Lee and offers 17 artists and just under one hour of classic Jamaican recordings.
Blasting off with Johnny Clarke's "Move Out A Babylon," the majority of tunes on
"Oldies Keep Swinging" remain timeless. Among the standouts: "You Are My Angel" by
Horace Andy, "Laser Beam" by Don Carlos, the rare "Jah Jah Bless The Dreadlocks" by
the Mighty Diamonds, Delroy Wilson's "Have Some Mercy" and the Unique's cover of the
Impressions' "Gypsy Woman."
Also noteworthy are singles by Linval Thompson, Max Romeo, Gregory Isaacs,
John Holt and Bob Marley.
Although the song selection is top notch, the packaging is sub-standard. Mistakes
in the credits, uneven recording levels and abrupt song endings take away slightly from an
otherwise outstanding compilation.
