CHAKA DEMUS & PLIERS
All She Wrote
(Mango)
This originally ran in the St. Louis Post Dispatch in 1993
Chaka Demus and Pliers, best known for last summer's
monster hit "Murder She Wrote," are still one of Jamaica's
hottest dancehall teams. Combining the former's rough DJ
style with the latter's smooth Pinchers-sounding vocals,
this duo continues to stay near the top of the international
charts.
Their current release, "All She Wrote," starts off with
(for some reason) the aforementioned smash single, continues
with the sweet sounds of "I Wanna Be Your Man," then begins
to lose steam. A few other tracks, most notably the cover
version of Curtis Mayfield's "She Don't Let Nobody," are
exceptional, but for the most part Chaka Demus and Pliers
can't sustain that excellence over an entire album. Do
yourself a favor and wait for a greatest hits package.
